Today I decided to take the train to tour the Palace of Versailles. Which is more like a city that is a palace. I know i have talked about the extravagance of many buildings in Europe but this is by far the most extravagant building I have ever seen. The sheer arrogance of the French Royalty in the reign of the kings just amazes me. I shelled out some extra bucks this time to take the guided tour. i figure it would be worth it because of the rich history behind Versailles. Im really glad i did, not only was the tour very informative but i happened to be the only person who booked it for that time and got a private tour.
In school we learn about the history of france and some of the background behind the revolution and stuff like that. It really is something different to see it with my own eyes. The Palace can show you exactly why the peasants who couldn't even afford bread overthrow the monarchy. It is crazy the extravagant frivolity displayed by the Royal Family. Louis the 14th called himself the Sun king, why? because he believed he was as close to deity as it gets and that everything revolves around him. I cant believe it took three generations of Kings like this before something actually happened to stop it.
The gardens of Versailles were completely picturesque. 800 acres of sheer beauty, from fountains to shrubbery that have been maintained in the strictest fashion. it was a typical French Garden in that it was all very symmetrical and everything was defined and organized. Unreal scenery from the back of the Palace.
The train ride in to Versailles was really cool. once again it provided me with a great view of Paris. This time though the ride showed a different side of Paris. No more relics and stone but it looked much more like a modern normal city. I got to see something i totally forgot about, the original Statue of Liberty, which was pretty killer, not the same size though.
I only ventured out to do two things today, the second wasn't on my list until i got here. The Basilica Sacre Coeur. Its this crazy cool Basilica on the top of the tallest hill within the city of Paris. This was actually the first place I've been escorted out of on the trip, mostly because i saw the no photos signs and ignored them anyway.
Only a couple more things to see tomorrow on my last day in Paris, they are less popular tourist attractions so I hope they will be less busy. I think this may make them hard to find, oh well its always an adventure.
Again there was a ton of music involved in today so it was hard to choose one... and since its my blog I have decided I don't have to. Its a fairly eclectic selection so enjoy.
Rant Of The Day:
You know what i love so much much about music? let me tell you. Music is universal, by that i mean any song at any time can mean something to anyone. Music crosses boundaries of age, sex, culture, language and social status. Thats the beauty of music, so if at any time you find your self hating on my song selections go away and never come back. That is all.
